ROMERO POLO TO BUILD THE STONE BREAKWATER OF THE MOLL CATALUNYA AT THE PORT OF BARCELONA

The joint venture formed by Romero Polo and Sacyr Construcción has been awarded the contract to build the stone breakwater for the new Moll Catalunya at the Port of Barcelona. The project, driven by the Port Authority of Barcelona (APB), has a budget of 72.3 million euros and a 27-month execution period, with work expected to begin this summer.

The project involves creating a 44.7-hectare area by constructing a stone breakwater, with a depth of up to 16 meters. This will serve as the primary deposit for materials from dredging activities in the port docks, the navigation channel, and other ongoing works, such as those at Moll Adossat and Moll de l’Energia. In total, up to 6.3 million cubic meters of material are expected to be moved, which will help facilitate the creation of platforms for the future Moll Catalunya. The work will also include developing a platform for storing and managing the materials.

The project stands out for its unique focus on the circular economy, as it prioritizes the use of recycled materials, reducing transportation needs and contributing to a more sustainable construction process. With this initiative, the Port of Barcelona is taking a step forward in the reorganization of its port activities, concentrating container traffic in the southern area and reinforcing its commitment to decarbonizing the sector, in line with its long-term sustainability strategy.
